Beer Night

Some of us are lucky to have friends…but then some of us are lucky enough to have friends that go on a beer-cation and bring you back a crap ton of stuff to try.  I happen to be part of the later and have been blessed with a good brother in beer.  This past Friday we had a beer themed night.  First we bottled our home brewed IPA and then brewed a new grapefruit, honey ale…all while drinking the beers below.  It was glorious (if I remember correctly).

That being said, it’s best to document the beers here.  They were super good and if you come across any of these in your travels, it’s best to get yourself some (and bring another back for me).

***not listed below are the other drinks we had during the evening – shots of fireball, a shot of fireball mixed into an Angry Orchard (it tastes like applesauce for real), a home brew from my boss, some random other can of beer, and a cran-beer-rita shotgunned.  It was a good night, ya’ll.

Beer: Permanent Funeral
Brewery: 3 Floyds Brewing
Style: American Double/Imperial IPA
Beer Advocate Score: 100
Notes: This thing was amazing and intense.  Definitely one of the top beers I’ve had the pleasure of drinking.  They may call it a pale ale, but if it is…it’s a pale ale with some balls.  It’s easy to see why this is ranked in the top 50 of beers.  The beer goes down easy for something that packs so much of a punch.  It’s got come nice citrus notes mixed in with some honey, but has a nice spiced kick on the way down as well towards the back.  Oh…also, this stuff was only 8 days old.  Legit.

Beer: Fresh Squeezed IPA
Brewery: Deschutes Brewery
Style: American IPA
Beer Advocate Score: 94
Notes: For something that by the label would seem to taste huge of hops, it really didn’t.  Not that it’s a bad thing by any means, but it wasn’t as hoppy as I had expected.  With that being said, it reminded me of a Stone Enjoy By where it is really smooth and fresh.

Beer: Coffee Bender
Brewery: Surly Brewing Co.
Style: American Brown Ale
Beer Advocate Score: 93
Notes: Do you like coffee?  Do you like beer?  Then this is right up your alley.  The beer flavor is pretty much completely masked but the delicious coffee flavor.  It’s basically alcoholic cold brewed coffee.  This was one of the wife’s favorites of the night.  You know it’s good if she steals your glass.

Beer: Raspberry Tart
Brewery: New Glarus Brewing
Style: Fruit Beer
Beer Advocate Score: 97
Notes: Holy crap guys…just typing this I can remember how amazing the smell alone of this beer was.  It was like laying down in a damn field of raspberries.  The taste was just as good and lived up to the name raspberry tart.  It was legit like a raspberry tart.  I may get crap for drinking fruit beers, but when it’s this good…I don’t care.  Another to not pass up if you can get your hands on some.

Beer: Thumbprint Spiced Ale
Brewery: New Glarus
Style: Spiced Beer
Beer Advocate Score: 82
Notes: As a fan of spiced beers (fall and winters are usually this way), this one was right up there.  Not a huge level of spice, but enough to entice the palate.  You can definitely get a taste of the cinnamon, allspice, and ginger that makes up this nice brew.

Beer: Scream
Brewery: New Glarus
Style: American Double/Imperial IPA
Beer Advocate Score: 96
Notes: Another solid DIPA. This one not packing the punch of Permanent Funeral, but just as good.

Beer: Moon Man
Brewery: New Glarus
Style: American Pale Ale
Beer Advocate Score: 92
Notes: This one was one of the more sessionable beers that we had to drink.  At this point in the evening, the notes kind of went out the mental window.  All I know, is that it was really good.  Everything from New Glarus was solid and amazing.

Beer: Trail Head
Brewery: Fat Heads
Style: American Pale Ale
Beer Advocate Score: 91
Notes: It was good…they are from Ohio…drink them.  This won a silver medal in the fresh hop ale category at the Great American Beer Festival last year.  If I haven’t given you enough reason to try it, I can’t help you.
